We often joke about it, but the most common question that pops up in presentations is "When is the best time to climb Kili", the funny thing is I have also been asked the same question at Everest keynote presentations.

So in a nutshell, I created an infographic that rounds it up to help you decide. The graph indicates temperature, precipitation and crowds in a graph, based on the last 10 years of averaged stats.

Some points to remember:

  • Even in the busy months on Kili, you still have a peaceful and spacious experience. You will never be walking in "Shongololo" or long queue like lemmings. It's a big hill - keep that in mind.

  • Kili sits a few degrees off the equator and there is no massive difference between summer and winter, and at altitude, "warmer temperatures" could mean the difference between -5˚ and -10˚ on the summit.

  • Weather can change from one moment to the next. Just because the graph says its a dry period doesn't mean you don't stand a chance of unexpected rain or snow higher up.

  • In short, the numbers indicate that September is the most popular month, but at the end of the day, Madam Kilimanjaro sees summits 365 days of the year.

  • Also ask your operator if they have any full moon trips scheduled, it's not essential, but a nice cherry on the top, but don't let that disrupt any plans you may have.
